Day 21 on the Vermont Long Trail

We woke up around 6:30 this morning and headed out. The trail had a lot of ups and down’s, which the downs were steep. Tiny Turtle took some falls along with the rest of us. A section of the trail shortly after leaving the shelter had a wooden ladder and then metal holds down the cliff. This was a good layout. I am glad the volunteers decided to incorporate the assistance down the cliffs as it would have made for a dangerous drop for most people.

After 1.6 miles we took a morning break at Theron Dean Shelter. The shelter had a nice view but is very small. We met up with Doc and her husband! This was a wonderful treat! We have not seen her in a while! She was originally north bound but changed to south bound in order to meet up with family. After a good half hour visit we proceeded on our journey.

Just after passing the shelter we found a cave, which lead us back up to the shelter! After another 4-4.45 miles the rain and wind began and did not stop. After 6.3 miles we made it to Birch Glen Camp. It was nice to get out of the rain. We were all wet and cold. Birch Glen Camp is a nice shelter to stay at. It is dry and spacious. It is set up as 2 rooms. The back room has 4 bunks.  The front room has a half wall around the outside with a small door and a table set up on one side. The water source is good and not far from the shelter. We planned to have lunch and see what the weather was going to do before we decided the next plan.

We ended up staying the night at Birch Glen Camp. The rain and wind did not stop all night. It did make our day shorter but we all needed a little rest day.

  2. Glad to see your with us GF! Tiny Turtle took a fall and had mud all over him. He was upset for about 5 minutes but quickly was himself again! I just couldn’t pass posting his picture. We all had a good laugh about it afterward.
